Short-range Order in Undercooled Melts and Its Impact on the Solidification Behaviour

چکیده
As suggested by Frank [1] an icosahedral short-range order should be energetically favoured in undercooled metallic melts. Such a short-range order is predicted to influence the energy of the interface between the liquid and a solid nucleus, depending on the structure of the solid phase [2]. This in turn decisively impacts the nucleation behaviour of solid phases from the undercooled melt, and by means of this the properties of the as-solidified materials.

Short-range order in undercooled and stable melts forming quasicrystals and approximants and its influence on nucleation
An icosahedral short-range order has been predicted to prevail in undercooled metallic melts. For melts of pure metals this hypothesis was recently experimentally confirmed by diffraction experiments. This work presents results of neutron scattering experiments on the short-range order of stable and undercooled liquids of alloys forming quasicrystals and polytetrahedral crystals. The studies in...
متن کاملNon-Equilibrium Solidification of Undercooled Metallic Melts
If a liquid is undercooled below its equilibrium melting temperature an excess Gibbs free energy is created. This gives access to solidification of metastable solids under non-equilibrium conditions. In the present work, techniques of containerless processing are applied. Electromagnetic and electrostatic levitation enable to freely suspend a liquid drop of a few millimeters in diameter. Hetero...
متن کاملDendrite Growth Kinetics in Undercooled Melts of Intermetallic Compounds
Solidification needs an undercooling to drive the solidification front. If large undercoolings are achieved, metastable solid materials are solidified from the undercooled melt. Containerless processing provides the conditions to achieve large undercoolings since heterogeneous nucleation on container walls is completely avoided. In the present contribution both electromagnetic and electrostatic...
متن کاملNucleation mechanism of nano-sized NaZn13-type and α-(Fe,Si) phases in La-Fe-Si alloys during rapid solidification
The nucleation mechanism involving rapid solidification of undercooled La-Fe-Si melts has been studied experimentally and theoretically. The classical nucleation theory-based simulations show a competitive nucleation process between the α-(Fe,Si) phase (size approximately 10 to 30 nm) and the cubic NaZn13-type phase (hereinafter 1:13 phase, size approximately 200 to 400 nm) during rapid solidif...
متن کاملExperimental evidence for dendrite tip splitting in deeply undercooled, ultrahigh purity Cu.
In a recent paper we used a phase-field model of solidification in deeply undercooled pure melts to show that a kinetic instability could result in dendrite tip splitting, and we speculated that such tip splitting could give rise to the phenomenon of spontaneous grain refinement. Here we present evidence, from the as-solidified microstructure of deeply undercooled ultrahigh purity Cu, of what a...
